In memoriam: Barry GW Arnason, MD, FAAN

In memoriam: Barry GW Arnason, MD, FAAN

The  MS+ community has lost its ‘grandfather.’ Barry GW Arnason, MD, FAAN. He is generally regarded as one of (if not, the) founder of he field of Neuroimmunology, the founding Chair of the University of Chicago Department of Neurology, the first  winner of the National Multiple Sclerosis Sylvia Lawry Award and responsible for inspiring and mentoring many leaders in the MS+ community. Without Barry’s efforts, we would not have had interferon-beta-1b (Betaseron/Betaferon).

Watch a video interview that we did in 2013 on ACTH.

As can be seen in this picture, he was actively working on a paper with new MS immunology concepts 8 – 10 months ago:

Tony Reder, MD shared that: “With his insights and new ideas he trained, inspired, and changed the futures of clinicians and research scientist around the world, was a lead in developing the first FDA-approved MS therapy, published 400 papers-many important, was a great clinician, and friend to many of us.”

His affable smile and willingness to inspire the next generation will be missed by all.
